first, the old.

the perimeter of my studio has been getting more and more cluttered over the past [VERY busy year] but now that we have a new pup and i want him to be a studio dog, i’m tackling the boxes and mini-piles.  somehow, i managed to find a small cache of artwork that i never posted up for sale.  this is round one of “the old”.  since my walls are pretty much covered from ceiling to floor as it is, i’m having a “vintage alicia-art sale“.

charlotte in spring: i did do a blog post on this piece once many moons ago, but never ended up listing it.  why?  i’m ADD and am easily distracted by shiny rusty objects (and i have plenty of those around here to catch my attention).  otherwise, i have no excuse.

charlotte’s song #9:  i did a 20 piece series called “charlotte’s song (late 1800s to early 1900s sheet music and frozen charlotte dolls, you see)… and this is the only one that remains.  eighteen of the others sold, and one was given to my mum because she was in love.  so sweet of her!

frozen charlotte assemblage

charlottle sometimes: i created this piece in late 2010, originally [i think] for kerin gale’s book “inspired remnants, curious dreams” but i ended up submitting a different piece instead… so she ended up in the “post this on your website when you have a spare hour box”… apparently it took a couple of years for me to remember to do what i had intended to do back then.

next, the new.

over the holidays i ran out of time to work on my “keepers” series of little assemblages, but now that my weeks and weeks of company are gone and craziness is over, i’m back at it.  part of this was created awhile back, but i’ve just now finished it.  i bought two  pairs of these eyes that i used in the piece and lost one, so only have one left.  if only i remembered where i bought them!!  these were among my favorite taxidermy eyes ever!  even worse, i had 6 of these little round metal bits that they fit perfectly in, and now at least three will go eyeless.  about time for a taxidermy eye shopping spree again if i do say so myself.  if you have a favorite taxidermy eye shopping place, please let me know.  van dyke taxidermy is fantastic, but i can’t remember the other place i’ve gotten them.

now available in my shop, the my first in my new series, a charlotte assemblage entitled “the keeper of dark and light”.  i’m not very creative with my naming sometimes.

assemblage by alicia caudle, frozen charlotte, animal teeth, quills, taxidermy eye
this wee charlotte is the older type, from around the 1860s i’m told, instead of the more typical 1880s-90s style (see her painted eyes).  she has been partially rusted because who doesn’t love a bit o’ rust sometimes?

frozen charlotte, assemblage, mixed media, taxidermy eye, animal teeth, alicia caudle, art

atop the little metal box charlotte resides, is an antique pocket watch winder (i have no idea what those are called)… which is all sitting upon a vintage gear.  above that, a taxidermy eye on another gear i rusted and antique brass beads nailed into the wooden base.

frozen charlotte, assemblage, mixed media, taxidermy eye, animal teeth, alicia caudle, art

here is a close-up of the charlotte and vial with porcupine quills and an animal tooth (love her eyes!):

vintage french book page text and crackle are behind the charlotte.

here is a close up of the eye.  and (i blush!!) the little mishap of the hanger on the back poking through.  it looks cool and intentional though, in a way.

frozen charlotte, assemblage, mixed media, taxidermy eye, animal teeth, alicia caudle, art

at the bottom hangs a small fleur d’lis i aged.  it actually hangs straight but i took this photo with the piece laying on its back.

here is a side-view of the piece laying down…

the whole thing measures about 4.5″ x 6″ and is available for purchase in my shop (at a reduced rate due to the hanger mishap — it still hangs totally perfectly though, of course).

heaps of items are being added to the site this week and more sales and specials (and some give-aways) are soon to come so check back over the next week or three!

it’s no secret that i’m typically a busy little bee and oftentimes forget to post blogs, read blogs, list items in my shop, etc., and these past few weeks have been no exception.  it’s almost summer break though, and this means an extra 5+ hours per day to create art, visit friends and post new goodies in the shop (home schooling takes up LOTS of time, you know!).

today i completed a mini frozen charlotte textile assemblage that i started a short while back.

frozen charlotte, assemblage, mixed media, textile, fabric, brass, found objects, recycled sari silk, vintage lace

in great anticipation of spring, i have called her “charlotte’s flower”.  last sunday, which was mother’s day, i recalled that the mother’s day before was the first day that our roses bloomed.  this year?  nothin’!  not a rose, nor a peony, not a mum or a fox glove or a purple cone flower or even a teeny tiny asian pear blossom.  we have buds, finally, but no blooms.  hmmph.  so, in this piece i’ve made my own (of course using the GORGEOUS recycled sari silk from miss lisa of mudhound studio).

this piece is now up for sale on my site, here.

i’ve recently taken painting back up, which is something i haven’t partaken in in quite some time (that’s all i used to do, you know — though 99% abstract). yesterday, i picked up a 6″ x 6″ canvas i had in my pile of blanks and painted this scene from a recurring childhood dream i recalled AFTER i finished painting it.  the dream: i’m not the three year old i was in real life when it started, but a bit older… maybe 15 or 22 or somewhere in between.  i was standing on the edge of the ocean, a storm brewing, wind blowing, waiting.  in the distance, to my right, i could always see a lighthouse, though it was rarely illuminated.  my dress would “wave” against my bare legs in my dreams, chilling me, and my pigtails would whip about wildly.  of course i’ve added the “modern day” twist of having stripey alicia-socks and red locks instead of naked legs and white-blond hair.  anyway, i was always waiting for something… “love”, though that didn’t really make sense to me at the time.  i dreamed this from about 3 years of age to roughly 8 or 9 and wrote many stories about it in my youth.  it’s so strange that i didn’t remember the dreams until after i had painted this, though i wasn’t really thinking when i did it.  perhaps our recent family beach trip influenced me?

this painting is also available for purchase in my shop, here.
(sorry, this item has been reserved — thank you so much!!)

long story short — i’ve always been crap at portraits.  anything having to do with people really, but i recently said “sure, i’ll play” to a limited pallet portrait challenge that gritty jane posted on mixedmediacollageartists.ning.com.  my color choices were unbleached titanium, mars black and cadmium red.  while painting this, she (the gal in the portrait) “told” me her name was “adoette”.  that sounds weird, maybe, but her name just popped into my head.  seeing how i wasn’t painting anyone specific or looking at a photo or anything for reference, i just went with it.  i finished her up, painted a tree behind her and i was done.  i think i finished her about five days ago.  so… while posting this now, i wanted to look up “adoette” as i’ve never heard of any such name and lo and behold, it’s a native american name that actually means “large tree”.  i thought that was a strange little coincidence indeed since there is a barren tree behind her and i’ve never actually painted a tree before.

original acrylic painting, portrait, redhead, barren tree, adoette

this too is also available in my shop, here.

i’ve had so much fun painting this portrait, that i’m starting a whole new series of “imaginary friends” — portraits of those i conjure up in my mind just for the sake of painting them.  time spent painting is pure bliss for me.
oddly, i JUST now realized that the second of my three childhood dreams was of being a native american lady who lost her man in battle and wished to die herself.  so morbid and sad, i know, but you can’t help what you dream, can you?

soon i will be posting new dolls and doll parts on alteredbits.com, new textile bundles and vintage lace bits, and a new series called “fragments”… plus some other stuff that will hopefully be worth a quick peek.

it’s time again for one world one heart!  actually it was time about a week ago but i was a bit slow… what else is new, at least for those who know me.  for those who don’t, hello!  i’m alicia of altered bits, a little online shop with mixed media and altered art goodies — and i have some goodies to share.  i’m also a mixed media artist with an affinity for dolls/doll parts, anatomical “things”, rust and anything that’s old, tattered and interesting to look at.

this year i’ll be giving away three things.  first up, a small frozen charlotte doll with a little bundle of gorgeous recycled sari silk ribbon in earthy hues:

one world one heart, giveaway, frozen charlotte, recycled sari silk
next up, the whole “collaged bits” collection from altered bits in digital format (i’ll upload it to my server so you can download it).  i created these sheets and images so you won’t find them anywhere else (if you do, tell me though ’cause they’re mine, ha!):

altered art, digital collage sheets, giveaway, one world one heart, anatomical images
last but not least, i’ve pulled one of my anatomical collages to give to YOU.  it’s entitled “still” and is mounted on black mat board.  i am not as much of a collage person as i used to be as i prefer to create creepy little assemblages but i almost miss the feel and smell of paper when i leave it for too long.

anatomical collage, altered art, mixed media art, alicia caudle, stitched collage, one world one heart

you know the drill — just leave a comment and you could win one of these three items.  winners will be announced on february 17th (the day before my birthday).

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS: i had a winner last year who left no email address or blog address so i was bummed.

i have gotten about 47 emails inquiring as to how i crackle and age my little frozen charlottes.  or maybe 48.  i’ve lost count.  anyway, i have finally created a PDF tutorial outlining how to create these aged and crackled little babes, with additional instructions on how to create a faux rust finish AND how to create the little 3d hearts (only about 13 people asked about that, but i wanted to include it anyway).

crackle, frozen charlotte, aged frozen charlotte

soon i will also offer a kit that will include the tutorial, a small frozen charlotte, crackle medium and paint needed to achieve this effect.  this should be available by the end of the week.

you can check it out on the tutorial’s page of the altered bits website.

i will be giving away a copy of this tutorial next weekend.  just leave a comment to be entered into the drawing.  the winner will be selected at random via a random number generator.

to get over my hump of funk, i created a few happy things this weekend.  i was thinking about the hundreds of frozen charlottes i’ve sold in my shop over the past year or so and the fact that i’ve only created TWO things with those lovely little lassies (and nothing from the charlie lads, yet!).  so i remedied that — because they make me smile and i needed a bit o’ cheer.  of course i had to give them hearts — anatomical art is an alicia thing, ya know.

first, i made a wonky little wishes and dreams tin.  wonky because it doesn’t hang entirely straight.  personally, i think that just adds to the charm, but that is probably not the general consensus.  there are two little scrolls in a pocket, one to write wishes on, the other for dreams.  charlottes are magical girls you know and can make things come true if you share them with her.

next i created a small fabric collage: charlotte’s song (i just made that up on the fly).  somehow, while creating her i got “charlotte sometimes” by the cure stuck in my head and here it remains.  how do we remember such things so vividly after 20 odd years?

because of this, i had to add the vintage sheet music to the top:

altered art, frozen charlotte, music, vintage sheet music
the bottom (recycled silk ribbon and crocheted bits created by moi), with a tarnished little embellishment:

frozen charlotte, altered art, fabric collage, vintage sheet music, recycled silk, anatomical art
her crackle cracks me up (no pun intended).  the eye cracks remind me of childhood star-eyed cartoons for some reason.  it just happened that way and was by no means intentional.  because the piece as a whole is so light, i made her heart a bit more dark.

anatomical art, heart, vintage bisque doll, frozen charlotte, doll art, altered art
i wish i had a better photo of her as a whole.  i’ll have to snap some new ones tomorrow.

mixed media art, fabric collage, recycled silk ribbon, human heart, anatomy, anatomical art, altered art

lastly (though i actually started her second), on a 5″ x 5″ canvas, i created this piece.  it is, as of yet, untitled as she hasn’t told me what she wishes to be called.  maybe just “charlotte sometimes”.  but that is neither here nor there.

vintage doll, bisque, human heart, anatomy, frozen charlotte, mixed media art, altered art, crackle paint

the sides of the canvas are covered with painted vintage lace and have taxidermy tacks holding the recycled sari silk ribbon down.  i learned how to use the drill press today.  woohoooo!

crackle paint, assemblage, vintage lace, taxidermy tacks, canvas, altered art

crackle paint, assemblage, vintage lace, taxidermy tacks, canvas, altered art

at the top of the canvas, it says “monument to the memory of the” (the what?  the charlotte?  the thought?  her head is in the way so that is where that ends — you decide to the memory of what) and in the mid-left, it reads “a harmonising companion – a genial friend.”  i didn’t actually pick any of the verbiage out.  i have more of a propensity to grab and glue.  just so happens that it worked out, at least in my opinion.  i think the sentiment is sweet enough indeed.

vintage book text, words, altered art, frozen charlotte, crackle paint, recycled sari silk ribbon
this charlotte, as a whole:

altered art, collage, assemblage, frozen charlotte, anatomy, anatomical heart, mixed media art
from the bottom hangs a pretty and rusted piece i received as a gift during the art exchange last year.  i had it on my new journal that was somehow left outside and fell into the garden bed.  i couldn’t find it for days and when i did, the journal was ruined and the “tassel” was gorgeously aged.  i’ve had it sitting on my desk ever since and while assembling this piece, it got stuck to one of the papers i was using in the collage.  to me, that indicated that it needed to be a part of the piece.

all three of these are available in my shop.  i’m trying to recoup a bit from last month’s income thieving incident, but i will not complain about that again.  work has been ultra slow since i put three projects off to work on that stupid eco-travel site, so i’ve had lots of time to get organized around here and create.  a clear studio makes for a clearer mind and THAT is worth a lot!

peeks at some of my other week’s creative starts:

tomorrow i’m getting my bum in gear and finishing a bunch of ATCs and ACEOs i’m doing for a swap with the ever so talented miss gaby.  i should have done those this weekend but i was sidetracked with charlottes and family time.

happy week, friends!  i’m off to catch up on YOUR blogs — that is always a highlight for me and the past several weeks have been too crazy for me to do all that i wished.  what a blessing it is to have time to start catching up more.

today is a happy day and it’s so blissful that i’ve allowed myself to get way too distracted. i’m suddenly the mama of like… 150 new babies or so.

the short version: found a guy in germany who was selling a few of his personal collections of frozen charlotte and frozen charlie dolls. finally, they have arrived! i loved these little bundles:

german bisque doll, frozen charlotte, frozen charlie, vintage doll, antique china doll

coming from germany, of course all the newspaper was in german. i keep getting distracted trying to read it (apparently i was near fluent in kindergarten — do i remember now? nine!)

german newspaper, package

and now the goods… after opening two packages, this is what i found:

german bisque doll, frozen charlotte, frozen charlie, vintage doll, antique china doll

i have absolutely no idea what this says but i’m pretending that it is a proclamation of how i’m currently feeling: mega küchen-something! or maybe not, who knows. it sounds fun though from a german-ignorant girl.

german bisque doll, frozen charlotte, frozen charlie, vintage doll, antique china doll

by now my floor is covered in pretty little german dirt clods and old soil particles from the big babies who still carry with them some of the earth from which they were exhumed from. look how beautiful these are! i am going to be in fozen charlotte bliss for a very, very long time. they are a lot larger than i’d anticipated which pretty much rocks.

german bisque doll, frozen charlotte, frozen charlie, vintage doll, antique china doll

i’ve only opened one more bundle since the above photo — a package of more of the large babies. i have 8 more bundles to go but i think i’ll take a little lunch break for a bit before jumping back in to enjoy these little pretties. guess i’m going to have to post some on my site for sale too, ’cause seriously — can i really use ALL of them? probably, but that’s not the point. the husby probably doesn’t want to look at them for the next ten years while i try, i don’t imagine. he said our living room already has “plenty of doll corpses”.

such a great week for goodies, i’d say! i’m feeling pretty darn lucky.
