what an exciting month july is!  happy belated fourth of july to those in the states.  we had a blast at our house.

the pulse, seth apter
The Pulse, founded by Seth Apter of the Altered Page, is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented crew of individuals. More than 130 artists have answered a series of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented in a series of online posts which kicked off July 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  The posts are chock full of AMAZING art and links to the artists websites — go check it out!  This will be continuing every Sunday until about the Spring of 2012.

altered bits free collage pack giveaway

as a gesture of gratitude to all of my wonderful readers, i whipped up several little vellum envelope collage packs with collage sheet images, vintage book pages, printed papers and such to send off to five lucky winners (some also have vintage stamps, chipboard pieces, handmade papers and gears).  i will be having a giveaway for four of these this coming weekend here, and one for someone on facebook.  all winners will be announced july 10th.  on a side-note, it’s just occurred to me that all but one of the packs have anatomical images so hope you like body parts as much as i do.  most of the images are from new collage sheets that are not yet listed on my site.  just leave a comment here or on facebook to be in the drawing.

steampunk emporium by jema "emilly ladybird" hewitt

last, and certainly not least, i wanted to share in advance that i will be doing an interview with jema “emilly ladybird” hewitt regarding her recent book “Steampunk Emporium” on the 11th of this month.  i can’t wait to share this with those of you who are into steampunk and/or jewelry and/or oddments and/or costume design.  there will be yet another july giveaway for this: one free copy of the book “Steampunk Emporium” and a little steampunk + other goodies bag from me with gears, watch parts, cogs, 1940s vintage beads, etc.

i hope you all have a magnificently creative start to the new month!  i’m working on three new series and some paintings — if only i could just sleep once a week so i could get done all that is in my mind!!

several weeks ago i was interviewed by the wonderful ms. debbie overton from mixed media collage artists marketplace.  this is a new thing for me — i’m typically the interviewer and rarely the interviewee.

as noted on the site, the mission of the marketplace is:  “A place to connect, promote, inspire and share resources to help others live a creative life in their artful journey!”  how fantastic and kind of debbie to do so much to promote people. i adore this lady!  if you don’t already follow her blog you should.  there are amazing creative contributors and fantastic artist interviews, reviews, etc.  debbie also has a wonderful ning group that i have been a part of for a long time:

thank you so much, debbie!

in other news, happiness is a good, functional computer!  i got it back with almost everything totally restored and in good working order.  i’m insane about backing things up, but my external little terabyte drive drive started smoking a couple of weeks ago, literally, and i lost it.  that had everything on it — totally intended to replace it straight away but in dealing with school district bullshit, computer poo, a couple of shows, redecorating three rooms in the house, remodeling part of the other house and other insanity, it got pushed to a back burner.  bad me!  now i have two back-up drives.  i implore you to do the same as any little thing can go awry and it can wreak huge havoc on your arty life.  another thing: back up your blog every so often “just in case”.  i have a WP blog on my main site which was just hacked and deleted. that’s where i posted sales and specials, new site items, artist interviews, etc.  this is my tech side speaking… but it’s good to know.  </techie girl rant>

my sweet friend keriny (the ninny) deserves a little shout out right now too.  if you haven’t read her most recent blog post, you should!  i am so proud of this girl!!  not only does she have her new book coming out soon (inspired remnants, curious dreams — available on amazon for pre-order but that is the WRONG cover they have up there right now), she is going to be in another book entitled 1000 steampunk creations.  i can’t wait to get the book!

this is the magnificently GORGEOUS piece that she will have in the book:

you may or may not be able to tell by looking at it, but this genius necklace is actually a time travel device.  you should hop right over to her blog to read about it.  know what’s really flippin’ cool though?  i own this necklace.  this gorgeous piece of steampunk genius is MINE.  😉  (oh, and i get a photo credit in the book, but that’s nothing, really, compared to her BEING in it!)  congrats again, lady!!  (oh, and if you do read this post of hers, you will see that we’re in cahoots and planning up a few pretty darn magnificent things together as you read this!)  (not sure i’ve ever said “cahoots” before in my life.  what is the origin of this wacky word?)

i wish things hadn’t been so crazy lately and i wasn’t so busy.  i was featured in FIVE etsy treasuries this week.  i’m not bragging at all — my point is that they were GORGEOUS and i would have LOVELOVED to share the other people with you.  birdcage, one of my prints, was in two of them… the rest was cool doll parts and a frozen charlotte art piece.

thank you so much to everyone for all of your words of support about my computer.  she is healed and i’m sooooo happy.  🙂

mixed media, acrylic, collage, donna watson

i recently had the pleasure of interviewing donna watson of layers, a contemporary mixed-media collage artist/painter,  as the january/february featured artist on my altered bits site.  since the first moment i laid eyes upon her amazing artwork i was in love, in awe and extremely inspired.  most, if not all of you have heard of donna i’m sure, and i would imagine that you visit her blog on a regular basis to see her outstanding work and read her inspirational thoughts and quotes.  after interviewing her, i felt that i knew so much more about her than i had known before and it makes me admire her all the more, both as an artist and as a woman.

not only has donna shared a great deal of wonderful information about herself and her art career, she has shared with us an abundance of amazing art.  there you will find thirteen delectable pieces — some of which are even for sale.  but go read the interview for yourself >>

thank you so much, donna!!

beachyfishWow, the beach trip was fabulous!  I have no photos to share because I just wanted to play the first day and by the second day we had the most amazing thunder storm and I didn’t want to get the camera soaked in the sideways rain.  It was soooo much fun though and I did happen to find a few goodies: some crab claws, which I will have to figure out how to clean before sharing, a rusty key, a bird vertebrae or some such bone, some heart-shaped shells, a piece of cool driftwood, a rusty spring (my husby found that for me) and some other stuff that doesn’t stand out on my mind at the moment.  once i get things together and clean, i’ll get addresses to share the finds.

But none of that is important right now.  Patricia Chapman, the amazing and great assemblage goddess is now the newest recipient of the Altered Bits Love.

(Clicking this photo will do nothing -- click the one on the site instead)

Go to the Love page and read the wonderful and extremely informative interview and check out all of her fabulous assemblages and collage(s)!  There is lots to look at so make sure you have a few free moments to stay.  It was SOOO hard trying to decide where to put each image because they are all my favorites and I wanted all of them right here in your face when the page loaded.

Okay, go, go.  I know you will love Patricia and her wonderful art and stories so hurry and peek…
