first and foremost, i want to thank all of you for your sweet and wonderful comments and emails from my last most. i have been SO busy that i haven’t had time to respond yet but i will, and i love and appreciate you all.
now, on to biz…
i haven’t counted yet, but it seems to me there may be less submissions for to the altered bits mixed media art zine this round and the deadline is tomorrow. i could be wrong though. still, there were several people who said they had things to submit that i haven’t gotten yet so… if you let me know by the end of the weekend that you will be sending things, i can give you an extension until next friday, but only if you let me know so i can save a potential page for you (and i can’t make any promises). otherwise, if you have your pieces ready, please get them to me by the end of the day monday if you can. guess how i’m going to be spending my birthday tomorrow? finishing MY pieces. i have one started and not the other, neither are done. ha. if you need more time than that, just ask. i’m really quite behind and if i don’t have crap together i can’t really expect you to either. i STILL have to interview the magnificent and wonderful artist who will be the center of attention in this issue too. i really do suck.
over the past few weeks i’ve been working on some new digital collage sheets (okay, months, but shhh — i’ve been busy, thus super slow). i have three new “collage for a cause” sheets. two “for the birds” sheets and one “hearts only”. both my very own little bug studio (now an official non-profit) will receive 100% of the profits to start/finish our studio remodel for children on the autism spectrum to come art it up with my aspie son and me, and the other charity is the non-profit called the neighborhood center for the arts. remember susan in a previous post? you can catch up here if you missed it: https://alteredbits.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/arty-goodness-and-love/
i also started six new “art journalling borders and bits” digital collage sheets. i think i’m going to tweak some of them in the next week or two but they are fun. i’ve had lots of people ask “why don’t you do borders like everyone else? my response is “i have no clue what anyone else is doing — i don’t have time to look at other people’s offerings”. i guess i should!
over the next few weeks, i will be adding TONS of stuff. i have about a zillion bundles and kits here of varying sorts (art journalling, book making, vintage textiles, fabric and lace bundles, one of a kind randomness, new vials of about 4 or 6 kinds, etc.). just ’cause i hadn’t added anything to my site in the past 7 or so months doesn’t mean i haven’t still be snatching it up. looks like a hoarder’s nightmare around here right about now. i’m proud that i at least got nineteen new digital collage sheets today AND lowered the prices on 90% of the “stale” ones that have been up for so long. i’m also doing a buy two get one free, but no on “collage for a cause” sheets. you can peek at them here: http://alteredbits.com/digital-collage-sheets.php
more soon — i’m getting ready for a super fun arty day with the kids on monday as it’s a no school day for both home and public kids. wooohoooo! seriously sorry i suck at correspondence and returning emails. i’m quiet while in a funk but i’m snapping out of it, promise.

right after i posted the giveaway, my family and i traveled to yachats, oregon (thus my utter silence) for a job my husband had. in addition to being one of the most amazing musicians in the world, he’s the king of artisan concrete. he does the most amazing decorative concrete floors, patios, counters, etc.. anyway, it was a LOT of fun to visit the coast again (we go to the northern oregon coast almost every month but i haven’t been that far south in years). other than the gorgeous sea, stunning scenery along the drive, a doe and her fawn and heaps of sunshine, guess what i got to see!! one of my favorite artists and dearest friends kerin gale of remnants of olde. woots! i love miss keriny and it was so nice to see her.
stay tuned tomorrow for an exclusive interview with jema “emilly ladybird” hewitt, author of “steampunk emporium” and enter to win one of two fabulous prizes: a FREE copy of her magnificent book OR a little steampunk bundle of gears, cogs, watch parts and vintage beads, etc. see you then!
what an exciting month july is! happy belated fourth of july to those in the states. we had a blast at our house.
The Pulse, founded by Seth Apter of the Altered Page, is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented crew of individuals. More than 130 artists have answered a series of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented in a series of online posts which kicked off July 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The posts are chock full of AMAZING art and links to the artists websites — go check it out! This will be continuing every Sunday until about the Spring of 2012.
as a gesture of gratitude to all of my wonderful readers, i whipped up several little vellum envelope collage packs with collage sheet images, vintage book pages, printed papers and such to send off to five lucky winners (some also have vintage stamps, chipboard pieces, handmade papers and gears). i will be having a giveaway for four of these this coming weekend here, and one for someone on facebook. all winners will be announced july 10th. on a side-note, it’s just occurred to me that all but one of the packs have anatomical images so hope you like body parts as much as i do. most of the images are from new collage sheets that are not yet listed on my site. just leave a comment here or on facebook to be in the drawing.
last, and certainly not least, i wanted to share in advance that i will be doing an interview with jema “emilly ladybird” hewitt regarding her recent book “Steampunk Emporium” on the 11th of this month. i can’t wait to share this with those of you who are into steampunk and/or jewelry and/or oddments and/or costume design. there will be yet another july giveaway for this: one free copy of the book “Steampunk Emporium” and a little steampunk + other goodies bag from me with gears, watch parts, cogs, 1940s vintage beads, etc.
i hope you all have a magnificently creative start to the new month! i’m working on three new series and some paintings — if only i could just sleep once a week so i could get done all that is in my mind!!

The time has finally come… the Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams Blog Tour has commenced!! Read through this post to learn about some of the MANY wonders of epoxy clay, find links to all participants in the tour, view the prizes you can win (there are 115!!), and see free giveaways for my readers too! You may want to grab a cuppa coffee, tea or a beer and relax for a few — this is a HUGE post with lots to take in and look at!
First, as many of you know, I’ve been friends with Miss Keriny for a few years now so I was “there” for the ride when she wrote this most amazing book. It was such an honor and a privileged to get to hear the little bits and pieces she shared with me (most of it was a HUGE surprise when the book came out, of course, but I did get secret little-tiny peeks and hints along the way). I was able to learn so many great things about the wonders of Epoxy and Apoxy Clays before the book was even released! I mostly starting using Aves Apoxy Clay as an amazing adhesive in my assemblages, but have also made molds to create smaller items. I am just now getting into “the bigger stuff” since reading (and re-reading) her book and just have to say that I love this stuff!! So when Kerin asked if I wanted to participate in this blog tour, I was giddy. (My son would have said “duhviously!” wich is a combo of “duh” and “obviously”). Like Kerin, I want the whole art world to know about this great and wondrous art material and its endless uses! Kerin is the queen of opening so many eyes to this wonderful stuff!
This is an example of my most recent use of epoxy clay… everything, including the metal objects, hand-made boxes, hearts, bones, gears and beads atop the pieces and other bits are attached using Aves Apoxy Clay. Additionally, I built up the anatomical hearts with this great and wondrous product before making molds of them so I can include LOTS of hearts in future projects. Additional photos of these two pieces can be found on my website if you are interested in checking them out in more detail.
First and foremost, I would like to present the sponsors of this GRAND EVENT…
Visit these participating blogs along the way — the following is a calendar of dates each participant will be posting their wonderful information, art examples and giveaways.

it’s time again for one world one heart! actually it was time about a week ago but i was a bit slow… what else is new, at least for those who know me. for those who don’t, hello! i’m alicia of altered bits, a little online shop with mixed media and altered art goodies — and i have some goodies to share. i’m also a mixed media artist with an affinity for dolls/doll parts, anatomical “things”, rust and anything that’s old, tattered and interesting to look at.
this year i’ll be giving away three things. first up, a small frozen charlotte doll with a little bundle of gorgeous recycled sari silk ribbon in earthy hues:
next up, the whole “collaged bits” collection from altered bits in digital format (i’ll upload it to my server so you can download it). i created these sheets and images so you won’t find them anywhere else (if you do, tell me though ’cause they’re mine, ha!):
last but not least, i’ve pulled one of my anatomical collages to give to YOU. it’s entitled “still” and is mounted on black mat board. i am not as much of a collage person as i used to be as i prefer to create creepy little assemblages but i almost miss the feel and smell of paper when i leave it for too long.
you know the drill — just leave a comment and you could win one of these three items. winners will be announced on february 17th (the day before my birthday).
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS: i had a winner last year who left no email address or blog address so i was bummed.
…and really a lot more than that!
i’ve been a busy bee, re-stocking the altered bits shop with heaps of new goodies, including but not limited to frozen charlottes, little victorian dolls, other vintage and antique dolls and doll parts, a whole new page of digital collage sheets (these were up weeks ago — i’m just slow to share), new embellishments and found objects, vintage photo bundles, textile bundles and vintage crocheted lace… all kinds of little pretties. if i add five things per day to my shop over the next seven months, i should be caught up. 😉
a few new items were added to my etsy junk shop too… cleaning out the house in a new year is a great thing!!
i literally have hundreds more dolls so if you’re looking for some, let me know. i’m not going to be able to add them all for awhile (takes a LOT of time to photograph, resize/enhance, write code/add to site, create buttons, etc.).
on a totally random note, wanna swap? i’m looking for a cute little boy cdv, cabinet card or tintype and will swap you for other photos (i mostly have adults), dolls of whatever sort, vintage lace, or whatever you may want from my shop(s) of relatively equal value. i’ll even throw in some digital collage sheets for fun. 🙂 i’m really quite picky about this photo… typically i don’t use children in my art, unless they are fetuses. in fact, this will be my first child. but in the spirit of accuracy, i need a little boy (around age 10 in the first decade of the 1900s, named sam) for the historically accurate ghost book i’m working on.
back in the day when i had a kinder heart… or um, at least more time, i would create pieces or series to sell to raise money for causes i was passionate about. things like cervical cancer, schools for chiapas dot org, general art groups for under privileged youth, etc. i also often donated a piece or three per year to various auctions for good causes (mostly art teaching, autism/aspergers, school or child related). other than a few things on the altered bits site where 50% of the sale went to this or that, i haven’t done this much in the past couple of years and feel mean. i by no means have a lot, but we’re not quite starving just yet so i wish to help where i can in this lovely world of ours.
to feel like a better contributor to the world, i have just created and added a new big huge super high resolution digital collage pack of 10 pages (over 40 images), of all old papers, grungy book pages, postcards, letters and text of various sorts to altered bits’ collage sheets page. 50% of the proceeds will go to ethiopia reads, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing books to children who may not otherwise be able to experience reading them. a couple of months ago i had purchased some gorgeous handmade brass beads from an amazing ethiopian man who came to the west coast, US to sell his beads and charms, and i sold some on my site — 50% going to ethiopia reads as reading and literacy for children is a huge passion of mine, second only to art. or maybe they are tied. anyway, altered bits was able to provide several storybooks to young ethiopian children. the organization is amazing and they have a donkey with a mobile library on her back, traveling from village to village to pass out books (some to keep, some to borrow). check out their site to read about it.
ethiopia reads was recently featured on CNN, which i did not know until after i had donated to them. upon donating to them i learned that the feature helped them to receive a huge amount of donated books — around 60k. this is two HUGE freight containers of books, and it costs about $13,800 to ship each container. now they are struggling to raise enough to GET the books to these children, and that is why i created this lovely little (er, HUGE) digital collage pack. i want to help, if even only a little teeny bit.
the digital collage pack is HUGE — super high resolution print quality images (300 dpi) as transparent PNGs. the zip is 120MB+ large and is housed on a file sharing site that i would have to send an invitation link to for you to download. a bit of a hassle but VERY much worth it for the gorgeous imagery and great cause. print out to use in collages or art pieces or use in digital art as you please. or make me print them and mail them to you.
i have a few other good cause reading and literacy things in the works so check back soon if you’re interested. or check back even if you aren’t ’cause that’s not all i’m about. 😉 will have pulpy stuff to post soon as i have two books, for example.
despite being mucho busy with family stuff and travel plans the past several weeks, i’ve managed to get a few new things made and posted in my shop over the past couple of days. i have TONS of new stuff to add (soon) that i find to be quite exciting. some examples are: vintage german cuckoo clock movements, vintage radio parts (variable capacitors, to be exact) that are ever so cool looking, vintage framed victorian prints, etc. i should probably leave some stuff out for an element of surprise… though those are, quite admittedly, the coolest things.
here is a peek of some of the other things i’ve already posted:
i’m sure you’d believe it when i told you that i got the brass bells , porcupine quills and vintage brass/porcelain knobs almost a year ago to add to the site. you know i’m slow!
i’ve also added several new collage sheets. these are just a few:
you can go peek if interested, but some of the new ones are vintage dancing girls, cemeteries and mausoleums, geishas and vintage men.
more exciting than images printed on paper, is my newest journal. it turned out so fabulously “alicia” that i was quite reluctant to put it in my shop — i kinda felt that i should keep it… almost. it’s not that i don’t have an over-abundance of art journals, but you know…
i also made some more of those addictive charlottes, among other stuff. i swear i can make 1000 of those before i tire of them, or at least 43. they are so sweet and fun!
next tasks: finish and post stuff for the pulp redux collaboration, finish a piece for a challenge my friend lish came up with, finish my new first couple of pieces in a new series i’m doing… oh yeah, and get my act together with the zine and post the info here so everyone knows where my head is. in the meantime, here is the teeny-tiniest peek at my new stuff:
that doesn’t really give any ideas, now does it? more soon. 🙂
