i got some matte photo prints of some of my art which i’m having a sale on. $5 each, 4×6. leave a comment or email me at hi at altered bits dot com if you’re interested as i haven’t yet posted them on my site. i have a very limited amount of all but the first two on left.
i have also donated one of each of these to judah sleep, fellow mixed media artist, for his charlie’s spot etsy shop which i will be mailing out tomorrow, along with some digital collage sheets he’s already listed. if you are not familiar with judah and charlie’s situation, please read (this is from their shop description):
Why Charlie’s Spot?
Judah, Charlie, and extended family and friends!
please go take a look at their shop and buy if you can. once i have the money, if it’s still there, i’m snatching this up because it needs to live around my neck: anatomical heart necklace
this is what i did today — i bundled each of the prints up individually in little clear self-sealing bags, added pretty paper backing and made labels for each of the pieces. i hope they sell fast for these guys ’cause every dollar helps.
i am one damn lazy blogger! after all these years this is only my 200th post!? that astounds me. i would have guessed at least 350. hah. but it is what it is… if i wasn’t so sleepy and side-tracked by my still-wet paint pallet i would do the math (i love math) to see what my average is. meh.
recently, i was commissioned to do nude portrait but something quite unanticipated emerged, which i felt i must keep. it’s the fault of these wonderful 20 minute paintings mentioned in my previous post. if you paint and you haven’t tried it yet, please try it! or do a 20 minute collage. or a 20 minute assemblage (i’m not sure even i could do that, but still — timing yourself and forcing yourself not to touch it after your time is up is kind of spiritual in a way… and shitty in others, but humbling and fun and free). i pseudo-timed myself on this one (after spending 4+ hours on many backgrounds and underpaintings.
meet “myselves”…

it doesn’t look like me and is muddy, but i felt really drawn to her for some reason (more from how it makes me feel than from how it looks). so, she’s mine. i think i want to paint over that eye now, looking at it here. but enough of that.
sooo…. i’m having a post memorial day sale starting this very moment, through friday. $25 off select paintings. PLUS, anyone who buys a painting will be automatically entered into a drawing for a free 20 minute painting from me. you can pick male or female, nude or not nude. i hope you don’t pick a nude male — i’ve never tried one before. but i will if you do! see my sale paintings here: http://alteredbits.com/alicia-caudle-art.php i’ve never put my art on sale, but shameless admission: i’m nearly out of paint and canvases and need some art supply funds. is that bad to admit? well, even if it is, i just did.
here are a couple/few of the paintings up for sale (these were NOT done in 20 minutes):
after i posted the second to the last one (the noseless gal with blacked out eyes), i got a commission to do a custom rendition of her in 30×30″. this is going to be fun! and my largest painting ever.
happy memorial day to all!
first, the old.
the perimeter of my studio has been getting more and more cluttered over the past [VERY busy year] but now that we have a new pup and i want him to be a studio dog, i’m tackling the boxes and mini-piles. somehow, i managed to find a small cache of artwork that i never posted up for sale. this is round one of “the old”. since my walls are pretty much covered from ceiling to floor as it is, i’m having a “vintage alicia-art sale“.
charlotte in spring: i did do a blog post on this piece once many moons ago, but never ended up listing it. why? i’m ADD and am easily distracted by shiny rusty objects (and i have plenty of those around here to catch my attention). otherwise, i have no excuse.
charlotte’s song #9: i did a 20 piece series called “charlotte’s song (late 1800s to early 1900s sheet music and frozen charlotte dolls, you see)… and this is the only one that remains. eighteen of the others sold, and one was given to my mum because she was in love. so sweet of her!
charlottle sometimes: i created this piece in late 2010, originally [i think] for kerin gale’s book “inspired remnants, curious dreams” but i ended up submitting a different piece instead… so she ended up in the “post this on your website when you have a spare hour box”… apparently it took a couple of years for me to remember to do what i had intended to do back then.
if you’re interested in any of these pieces, you can find them here >>
next, the new.
over the holidays i ran out of time to work on my “keepers” series of little assemblages, but now that my weeks and weeks of company are gone and craziness is over, i’m back at it. part of this was created awhile back, but i’ve just now finished it. i bought two pairs of these eyes that i used in the piece and lost one, so only have one left. if only i remembered where i bought them!! these were among my favorite taxidermy eyes ever! even worse, i had 6 of these little round metal bits that they fit perfectly in, and now at least three will go eyeless. about time for a taxidermy eye shopping spree again if i do say so myself. if you have a favorite taxidermy eye shopping place, please let me know. van dyke taxidermy is fantastic, but i can’t remember the other place i’ve gotten them.
the keeper of color. 5×5″, handmade box on collaged canvas.
click to enlarge if you’d like to check out the detail. my favorite part? the eye. i covered it with several layers of resin and crackled it around the edges. see:
this piece can be found in my regular shop, here: http://alteredbits.com/alicia-caudle-art.php, along with several additional detail photos.
first and foremost, i want to thank all of you for your sweet and wonderful comments and emails from my last most. i have been SO busy that i haven’t had time to respond yet but i will, and i love and appreciate you all.
now, on to biz…
i haven’t counted yet, but it seems to me there may be less submissions for to the altered bits mixed media art zine this round and the deadline is tomorrow. i could be wrong though. still, there were several people who said they had things to submit that i haven’t gotten yet so… if you let me know by the end of the weekend that you will be sending things, i can give you an extension until next friday, but only if you let me know so i can save a potential page for you (and i can’t make any promises). otherwise, if you have your pieces ready, please get them to me by the end of the day monday if you can. guess how i’m going to be spending my birthday tomorrow? finishing MY pieces. i have one started and not the other, neither are done. ha. if you need more time than that, just ask. i’m really quite behind and if i don’t have crap together i can’t really expect you to either. i STILL have to interview the magnificent and wonderful artist who will be the center of attention in this issue too. i really do suck.
over the past few weeks i’ve been working on some new digital collage sheets (okay, months, but shhh — i’ve been busy, thus super slow). i have three new “collage for a cause” sheets. two “for the birds” sheets and one “hearts only”. both my very own little bug studio (now an official non-profit) will receive 100% of the profits to start/finish our studio remodel for children on the autism spectrum to come art it up with my aspie son and me, and the other charity is the non-profit called the neighborhood center for the arts. remember susan in a previous post? you can catch up here if you missed it: https://alteredbits.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/arty-goodness-and-love/
i also started six new “art journalling borders and bits” digital collage sheets. i think i’m going to tweak some of them in the next week or two but they are fun. i’ve had lots of people ask “why don’t you do borders like everyone else? my response is “i have no clue what anyone else is doing — i don’t have time to look at other people’s offerings”. i guess i should!
over the next few weeks, i will be adding TONS of stuff. i have about a zillion bundles and kits here of varying sorts (art journalling, book making, vintage textiles, fabric and lace bundles, one of a kind randomness, new vials of about 4 or 6 kinds, etc.). just ’cause i hadn’t added anything to my site in the past 7 or so months doesn’t mean i haven’t still be snatching it up. looks like a hoarder’s nightmare around here right about now. i’m proud that i at least got nineteen new digital collage sheets today AND lowered the prices on 90% of the “stale” ones that have been up for so long. i’m also doing a buy two get one free, but no on “collage for a cause” sheets. you can peek at them here: http://alteredbits.com/digital-collage-sheets.php
more soon — i’m getting ready for a super fun arty day with the kids on monday as it’s a no school day for both home and public kids. wooohoooo! seriously sorry i suck at correspondence and returning emails. i’m quiet while in a funk but i’m snapping out of it, promise.

boy have i been a busy little bee lately! getting ready for a few shows and adding things to the altered bits site over the next two or three days. i’ll have four new collage sheets (witches, bones, darker-themed-alicia-type stuff, as well as some naked ladies and such). apothecary bottles, mico-beads, petree dishes, microscope slides with covers, etc. all coming soon just a little too late for halloween. whoops!
i added three new photoshop textures, or backgrounds — whatever you could want to use them for on the free art page as well:
and last but not least, i’ve added a new tutorial for my “crackled window effect” on the art tutorials page. eventually there will be heaps of free and paid tutorials in both PDF and video format but it’ll take awhile to get them all up. some will be from me, and some from our fellow amazing arty friends so stay tuned.
you know those times when you put yourself fully into making something for someone and it ends up being a big ol’ flop!? well that seems to be my week. first, i was working on this sweet piece for my wonderful friend lisa jurist at mudhound primitives and decided to add a top coat of varnish. i have no idea where i got the image i used but i’d saved it for a long time and it felt soooo right to put it in her piece. about 20 seconds after i brush on the top coat, the image started to bubble, then sloughed off the canvas board! it was a total nightmare. i don’t think there is any way to fix that, so i shall start again. what a jackass i am!
so the very next day, i tried to make something for someone else. total mono-chromatic flop. here, just go ahead and laugh at me, i don’t mind (little hanging ACEO, the flapping flop of an attempt at something sweet):
to make up for it, i started something else for said friend and i felt it was just fine. set it down to dry, tossed my paint-covered baby wipe to the side and went on my merry little way (to watch dexter!). omg. so baby wipe landed on the piece and i could pretend i meant for this to happen but look at all of the black ickiness. i’m sad. so what? send a sweet friend two crap pieces and an IOU? lol. i crack myself up sometimes. i wish there were lots and lots more hours in the day! or that i didn’t have to cut my art time to work (took a month off — bad, bad timing for that one!!).
i did, however, start one and finish another piece that i just so happen to like (both!), so at least i have a 50-50 thing going on this week. will post those later.
off to read emails for the first time in 3 or 4 days, woots! happy creating, friends. 🙂

P.S. Bunches of us have been particpating in The Art Exchange. If you don’t know what it is, here is the gist: you get an email from one of the players, you send a piece of art of sorts to the person in the #1 slot in the email, you move the #2 person up and replace them with yourself in the #2 spot. Sooo… you end up sending out ONE piece of art, and you forward the email to six people. In turn, you get THIRTY SIX pieces of art in return. A couple of the people I’ve sent this too are having difficulties finding players that aren’t too busy. If you’d like to play, post here or email me so I can get you in touch with someone to get you involved. It’s soooo fun!
this isn’t going to be a pretty post as i haven’t any arty imagery to share today. sorry. too busy trying not to stress on the little one starting first grade at a new school AND riding a big huge bus all by himself (can you feel the butterflies in my tummy?). plus zine. plus trying to finish six plus two assemblages. plus crazy order week. plus about 78 other things. to make up for it, i have found this fun little site for you while drinking a chilled bottle of their organic iced green (the inside of the cap commanded me to visit their site for a tea leaf reading). go have your tea leaves read at tazo.com. my experience was somewhat scaring but i’m sure yours will be quite thrilling.
(apparently sir tazo thinks i would not look good in harem pants. i think that’s mean. but at the same time, probably true.)
so first order of biz… i was offered space at the alberta street fair (9/19, 11-6pm) . if you’re in the portland area and want to share a spot, let me know — great opportunity but bad timing for me as i don’t have much available due to a few recent sales. if you’re from anywhere near here, you know it’s a big, fun art extravaganza (WAY bigger and better than last thursday events). if you’re not familiar: this is the 12th annual alberta street fair. they close the whole dang street down and jam pack the entire area to the brim with art, music, food and drink. there is even a parade.
okay, so i warned you before and i’m shameless… i’m sponsoring the “alicia needs a sewing machine” fund. not only do i need a sewing machine, but september is national sewing month (i learned that while drooling over my 300ish stitch machine so figured i’d share the tidbit that i was previously unaware of). as such, i’m offering four digital collage sheets from my site for $10 for an unspecified duration of time (probably a week). to a lot of you this means nothing, which is totally fine and dandy so please just skip ahead to the next paragraph, but since i sell dozens most weeks, this is a cool deal to some (i’m guessing). free shipping (they are digital) and any sheets qualify, even those that don’t claim to be digital. just paypal me the ten bucks (or request an invoice) and i’ll send to you PNGs, PDFs, JPGs, flattened PSDs — whatever you want. just specify what sheets and what format and i’ll email them within a day. they were designed for my zero margin printer so if yours isn’t that fancy i can shrink them a smidge so nothing gets cut off — just let me know that too. email: hi at altered bits dot com. shameless, i know… but i need the ability to sew for KC’s workshop and my 1907 singer is a tad too antiquated to get anything other than a boring ol’ straight line out of it and even then it’s sometimes iffy. (and i reiterate, boring. straight.)
this paragraph exists only for those i ordered to skip head.
oh wait. i do have a photo to share. micro peek at a side view of one of my newest books i’ve been playing with this week between bouts of stress and mad zine designing. there are lots of pockets and doors and secret little holes. (shh!)
